Sun Ovens - Great for Preparedness, but use them!

A few weeks ago Paul Munsen of Sun Oven's International visited Las Vegas for a few seminars on cooking with the sun. During his visit we discussed that over the years many people had purchased the Global Sun Oven for emergency back-up cooking but did not use them.

I found it hard to believe, because my family has used the Sun Oven regularly for over 12 years. I would be hard pressed to know how many delicious meals or loaves of bread we have cooked in the Sun Oven during that time. Not to mention the energy savings that has accumulated over the years!

Of course I save energy, especially during the hot months of summer in Las Vegas (the house would get hot and the air conditioner would work overtime), but that is not the primary reason I use the Sun Oven regularly. I use it because food tastes better than in the regular gas oven or our crockpot. I often refer to what my daughter said when she was 13 (24 now): "Daddy, always use the Sun Oven whenever you can...food tastes better!"

Some people think it would be good for boating, camping or just a back-up for emergencies. I think it is great for every sunny day cooking. It is my most valuable cooking device. In all honesty, my barbeque comes in a close second.

While I rely on it for cooking roasts and bread I also know it would be relied upon heavily if there were a disruption of the household utilities. I definitely wouldn't use my charcoal cookstove or my propane barbeque too long in an emergency. They smoke and advertise to everyone that you are cooking. The Sun Oven quietly cooks the food with no smoke or fumes.

There has been a few articles the website of the Sun Oven has on their media page regarding using Sun Ovens rather than letting them sit in the basement or garage.
These articles may be of interest to you regarding solar cooking and preparedness:

Thanks, Mike

PS we are looking for volunteers to help us with solar cooking events we are working on in the future. Please stop by Vegas Trailer Supply or drop me a note through the web site emails if you want to volunteer.
